Cambridge Scientist Shatters Myths About Substance Abuse & Rehab

(September 2014):
A very well regarded Cambridge scientist, Dr. Roberto Salvatonne, has shattered several myths about drug rehab. After spending nearly 3-decades studying substance abuse and the effectiveness of rehab treatments, he finally has made some startling discoveries.

More than 20 million Americans ages 12 and older needed—but were not receiving—treatment as of 2007, according to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.

Myth #1: Addicts are not ready to stop using.

It is a common excuse to completely ignore treatment options when family members think addicts are not ready to stop abusing. That is completely false. Dr. Salvatonne describes that addicts simply feel that they won’t be able to overcome their addiction, not that they are unready to face treatment. It is recommended for loved ones to offer positive support and truly dedicate the time and resources to the addict.

Myth #2: No Health Coverage or Could Not Afford Treatment

Dr. Salvatonne found that over 80% of families can afford drug or substance abuse rehab. Dr. Mariah Longhorn runs the highly regarded, free rehab treatment organization, Go Drug Rehab, “The value of a life is priceless, and no expense should be spared when treating a serious addiction – every addiction is serious. We help family members and addicts find affordable or free treatment”.

Last year, Congress passed the mental health parity law, which for the first time includes addiction treatment under a federal law requiring that insurers cover mental and physical ailments at equal levels, as reported by The New York Times.

Myth #3: Drug and Alcohol Rehab Treatments Do Not Work

New research from 2014 studies show that rehab treatments are incredibly successful, but require ongoing care. This ongoing care is free and requires the support from family, friends, and supporters. The image below shows how stress treatments work similar to drug and alcohol rehabs – both are successful, but require ongoing care to keep 100% clean.

There are many options besides 12-step and inpatient rehab. Organizations like, Go Drug Rehab, offer free assistance for patients looking for help and loved one’s that need answers.

“Drug addiction treatment reduces drug use and its associated health and social costs.”

(National Institute on Drug Abuse, 2014)

Bottom Line: Rehab Treatment is Proven and Effective if You Don’t Wait to Get Help.

All studies prove that the best time to get help or go to rehab is right now. Dr. Salvatonne recommends inpatient rehab centers for highest success rate (as high as 98% success). Avoid scams by using a free treatment hotline like Go Drug Rehab or the National Drug Abuse Line.
